Best Dressed Oscars 2012

I love the Oscars. I got to watch all of the pre-coverage and the show as my hubby attended to the sick kids (well that and they did not move much the whole night thanks to strep and stomach bug – ugh….more on that later!) So today my post has to be quick (as they are both home from school…although why are they running around when they are sick?? anyway…)The glamour, the dresses and the stars were shinning last night. Here are my top 5 favorite picks for best dressed:

  • Michelle Williams chose a great color and dress. The coral strapless Louis Vuitton gown was amazing.  I don’t know why people thought it was red! She looked stunning and she seems like such a lovely person!
  • My second favorite was Octavia Spencer in that sequined gown! She really knows how to dress and work her curves – it was elegant and Oscar worthy.  The dress was by designer Tadashi Shoji.
  • Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford looked so fresh. Her bracelet and rings added just the right touch of sparkle.  Her hair and make-up was flawless. I actually liked the cape as it was different but glad she took it off so we could see the dress!
  • Next was Tina Fey who looked radiant.  The strapless Carolina Herrera gown made her look perfect and her hair and accessories matched perfectly as well.
  • Cameron Diaz in Gucci  – the hair, her skin color all flowed together and the necklace was fab!

@JasonWu. I got nothing!

While the men were prepping for the @SuperBowl many of the ladies were heading to @Target to see the @JasonWu line. I wish this was a fun post on what I thought of the fabrics and what neat items I picked up. I got nothing! From what I hear all items are sold out everywhere and the sizes run really big. My Target store opened at 8:00 am and when I arrived at 10:00 am all I saw was 2 size XL shirts and one really ugly scarf. That’s it, nothing else. When I asked up front about the selection they had no idea what I was talking about!  But the sales associate at the dressing room said people were lined up at 8:00 am outside. Really? In the suburbs of Boston? Well at least we got to preview the items and there are a couple items left online.

Tangerine Tango Color of 2012

Today is a bright, sunny and warm day in Boston so it is making me think of Spring!  Right before the holidays the folks at the Pantone Institute announced the color of 2012:  Tangerine Tango.  It is like a reddish-orange color and full of energy. Glad I have some left over flip flops and t’s in this color from last season!

According to Pantone, orange has been gaining popularity among designers and consumers for years and is now being used in fashion, design and cosmetics. It has year-round viability with its vibrancy to match spring’s liveliness, while still holding on to the elements of its traditionally autumnal hue. Love it! What do you have in your closet from last year that you can grab this season in this fun color?

Exercise in the new year? @lululemon to the rescue

It is a new year and the craziness of the holiday season is over. For many of us that means back to work, back to school and back to an exercise routine. My friend said she went to the gym on January 1st and there were no parking spaces in the parking lot. Let’s see how long that lasts! Notice I did not say I went to the gym and could not find a space…..

Hopefully the three sessions I bid on and won at a charity auction will help me jump start my fitness routine (yes, once again!)

This is sad for me to admit but I did have to dig though my closet for my sneakers and exercise clothes!  Yes. those. old. exercise clothes. I think putting your clothes out and having them ready makes all the difference and having fun, cute exercise clothes can certainly help to motivate you as well. I do have two pairs of pants from lululemon athletica – They make the BEST pants!  Of course the headbands, gym bags and tops are fun and fashionable as well!

A couple of nice workout shirts and my favorite lululemon pants should get me motivating in no time…psst..there is a sale going on in the lululemon stores right now so get moving!

Outlet shopping tips

It is that time of year again when my friends and I hit the local outlets. We are lucky as we have outlets within a few hours of us. The Wrentham Premium Outlets in Wrentham, MA and Settlers Green in North Conway are both pretty great.

Each fall we try to head to either one BEFORE Thanksgiving because let’s face it, after is just a zoo.  A couple weekends ago we headed up to North Conway and at my suggestion we headed to the larger, more popular stores like Coach and Gap and thank goodness we did as on that Saturday the lines we sooooo long. Here are some tips if you are going to hit the outlets this season:

  • Avoid weekends if you can – I know this might be difficult, but it is just crazy then.  If you have to go on a weekend get there first thing or go there right before they close. Check out the larger, key stores earlier or later to avoid the crowds.
  • Check your coupons – many times outlets do not allow you to use the store coupons.  However, many outlets do offer special packages and discounts so check websites before you leave.
  • Have fun – Stay hydrated, try not to carry a lot of bags and be strategic. We actually saw women with shopping bags on wheels. Stop for breaks and wear comfy shoes. Sometimes is does pay to map out your course of what stores to go to first.  I always love the outlets for a wider selection, great sales and of course fun company!

Summer dresses and footwear from BCBGMAXAZRIA

I can’t wait for the summer weather to arrive here in Boston – it has been chilly these last few days and I am glaring at fashion magazines wishing to wear some of the fun clothes. On my list of items to buy this summer are some fun shoes and a tank or two!

Our friends at Bluefly have the best clothes. Check out one of my favorite designers bcbg on Bluefly. If you love flirty, feminine dresses and stylish separates this is the collection for you (and oh the shoes!). I have a black BCBG skirt that I bought years ago that I still wear to every occassion and everyone complements me on it!

Here are some of my favorites I spotted on Bluefly.  This lime neon burnout cotton racer back tank combines two trends in one – bright and a sheer, almost lace looking tank – love the sheerness of it.

I remember years ago I was invited to a white party – where you wear all white (I did have a hard time deciding what to wear ) This white striped chiffon one-shoulder gown would have been just right!  So pretty.

For shoes I am craving a flat and a wood heel. Love the bcbg shoes! These beach leather ‘Agreice’ buckle platform sandals are the perfect summer accessories for cute shorts and dresses. The pewter leather ‘Betsy’ cluster flats would look great with jeans and some silver jewelry!

A Passion For Fashion: Susan Kanoff, Fashion Coach

I sat down with Susan Kanoff, fashion coach and founder of A Great New Look. Don’t we all need a fashion coach at some point in our lives?  With a passion for fashion and a natural flair for style, Susan has the innate ability to create fabulous outfits for women of all shapes and sizes. Working with Susan will help you to look and feel great, inside and out. Whether you’re updating a wardrobe, revamping a closet, or shopping for new clothes, Susan will teach you how to put stylish outfits together to suit your body type and lifestyle. You will always get honest and objective guidance without pressure to conform to fashion trends.

Here’s a quick Q&A on her background and advice to other women owned businesses.

Q: When did you first come up with your business idea?

A:  My background is in social work but I’ve always loved helping my friends and  family with their clothes. My business was born about 4 years ago when a close friend who is a life coach, persuaded me to follow my passion for fashion & style by launching a business as a “fashion coach”.  My first thought was “who will hire  a social worker as a wardrobe stylist”? But when you follow your passion good things happen, and within a year I had a robust clientele and was styling for television and print.

Q: What does the future hold for your business?

A:  In addition to working with private clients and running style workshops, I’ve started to do more makeovers. I recently launched Project Makeover,  a team  of service professionals who are dedicated to providing head to toe makeovers to  deserving women. I get a great sense of satisfaction when I’m giving back to the community and helping to improve women’s self-confidence and self-esteem.

Q: Any advice for other mom/women owned businesses?

A: Don’t spread yourself thin.  It’s easy to get pulled in too many directions—networking meetings, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc.  Pick and choose what works best for you and don’t try to overdo it.
