Snow in New England Before Halloween?

Everyone is shocked by the itsy bitsy dusting of snow on the ground before Halloween.  It was a surprise but hey we live in New England so expect anything. Remember the April fool’s snow storm many years back?  As I was digging through the bins of hats and mittens early this morning I thought I am so not prepared as my kids don’t have winter jackets. The kids loved seeing the snow this early and they just wore a sweatshirt and a fleece jacket with some mittens.

As I look out of my window during this Friday lunch hour at the 40 degree mark here outside of Boston I am thinking of recalculating those Halloween costumes!

Feather Extensions

Have your kids asked for a feather in their hair?   My kids begged for a feather extension in their hair for about three months.  So at the start of school we went to the salon and for $10 each they put a colored feather in their hair. The money went directly to charity so I thought why not. It reminded me of high school a bit but there were no chemicals involved just a tool to tread it in and crimp it to their hair.   Of course it did not last very long – only a few weeks so anytime we see a feather somewhere they want it. I prefer just clipping them on with a small clip so they can come out easily and they can change them whenever they want. Check out these sites where you can buy the crimping tools yourself and choose the colors you want!

Kids and cell phones and usage

Today on WCAP 980 AM we are talking kids and cell phones. How young is too young to have a cell phone? What about a recent study finding that cell phones used in shirts and pants pockets exceed FCC exposure guidelines and that children absorb twice as much microwave radiation from phones as do adults? Does texting lead to no conversations at all anymore?  We are talking kids and cell phones, texting and new technology. Listen in.

Halloween Accessories and Decorations

It is October so I could talk about Halloween all the time.  Do you have your Halloween accessories and decorations all set up? Are you shopping after Halloween for deals for next years celebration?

I have a ton of hats and wigs to choose from for a friends Halloween party but this year I will go as a witch. If you are looking for a simple costume try Personalcreations.com. They have the cutest t-shirts.  You can personalize the t-shirts with the family name or have mommy and me t-shirts.

For the little kids they can test out these adorable and safe nail polish kits from Piggy Paint. They are non-toxic, low odor and very kid friendly as they are a 75% water based nail color. The kits for Halloween are “”Ghouls wanna have fun”” and “”the candy corn set”

For face paint you can go buy any kit at the store but these kits from Luna Star are perfect for little ones.  They are non toxic, hypoallergenic and come off easily with water. So if your child wants to be a ballet star or super star these kits are great. Each one comes with eyeshadows, blush, lip balms and nail color to complete the look.

Dress up the decor with some spooktacular accessories.  I went to target for my sparkly pumpkins.  The best selection is from chasing- fireflies.com. Choose from the Bats mantle scarf or the  bony votive holders.  There is also the Black glitter silhouette tree, Hallow’s eve ornaments, and the Bone head stand. Put these all together and you have a spooky mantle this Halloween.

And finally it’s really all about how much candy the little ones can stuff into a little bag.  Make sure to put your child’s name on their trick or treat bag so siblings do not fight over them.  Perfect for preschoolers are these personalized bags from personalcreations.com. The older kids will love the personalized loot bag for the abundance of tricks or treats your child will receive.

Halloween Countdown 2011

Halloween is right around the corner – 23 days and counting. Do you and the kids have your costumes picked out? What are the latest trends for kids costumes and adult costumes for Halloween 2011? Here they are….

Each season we see Halloween costumes tied to a theme, movie or reality show.  Halloween 2011 is all about zombies and advertising men, Harry Potter, Angry Birds, Green Lantern, Captain America and of course vampires still rule for adults and kids.

Or if it’s something in the news this past year you can bet you’ll see a costume. For adults this Halloween 2011 season we will see a lot of Charlie Sheen, Arnold and Anthony Wiener costumes as well as Lady Gaga and Katie Perry still and I’m sure we will see many black swan costumes as well. Jersey Shore will still be popular for the adults. Last year my friends and I went as the cast of jersey shore. How fun!

Here are some great web sites to find Halloween costumes for 2011.

Chasing-Fireflies has the most adorable costumes like the Baby Bat and the colorful Peacock costume. This online retailer of fun children’s products has a very whimsical selection of costumes and also has great clothing and special occasion themed gifts. They also have costumes for the whole family and great mommy and me matching costumes.

For older kids, whatever movie is popular makes the cut.

Costume Express has the most variety of kids’ costumes online.  Little kids always like Disney princess each year and witches are always popular. This season for kids the zombies, Captain Americas,  Green Lantern, the Bumblebee character from Transformers, Bey Blades and star wars are a hit but we are still seeing Harry Potter for both boys and girls.

Old School Costumes are coming back like the Smurfs, Strawberry Shortcake, Raggedy Ann and Andy, Super Mario Bros. and Ghostbusters are among the more popular old-school costumes this year.

Tween girls will be dressing up as if they were attending Monster High – Frankie Stein is one of the characters. Then you also have the cheerleader zombies.

Happy Halloween costume shopping!

Bad mommy moment

Well we all have them. After a busy day of work I was yelling from my home office for the kids to put on their swim suits for swim team practice (oh,  about a hundred times).  Shuffled them to the car, drove to practice and while in the locker room my seven year old says, “where is my suit?” As I crept closer and checked under her shirt, sure enough no suit on her nor in her swim bag. Ugh! I lost it and yelled and said why didn’t you put your swim suit on as you knew we were HEADING TO SWIM PRACTICE?? I made her go up to her coach and tell her she was going to be late and drove back home, walked in the house and there was the swimsuit on the sofa. She knew I was mad. Now I will pack an extra suit in the car just in case…lesson learned…and I will try not to yell as much.
