Educational TV: Martha Speaks PBS and WGBH Kids

The other day I posted about the countdown to the kids’ summer vacation and how it’s important to take a breather. I am all for letting the kids watch TV during some “down time” but I think it’s worthwhile to mention that not all kids TV is educational.  Oh sure they can learn some things from a few unmentioned shows (some sass and backtalk) but that is why we love Martha Speaks.

They are celebrating the end of the school year with a week of new episodes.  WGBH also released a study highlighting the positive effects of Martha Speaks on kids’ vocabulary – yeah!  A TV show that is really educational (and cute and funny too).

The fun begins on Monday, June 27 with the brand-new two-part episode, Martha’s Slumber Party of the Weird, featuring Martha and the gang sharing eerie science fiction stories. Then on Tuesday, June 28 through Thursday, June 30, enjoy Martha Speaks episodes featuring Martha and her friends enjoying outdoor activities including camping, canoeing, and watching fireworks. The adventures conclude on Friday, July 1 with another brand-new episode, The Long Rotten Summer, featuring everyone’s favorite summer activity…spending the day in school?

Plus there are some fun online activities you can do with your kids AND The Martha Speaks website is now mobile-optimized for the iPhone and iPad, offering families another way to bring the educational content from Martha Speaks to kids wherever they are. The Martha Speaks website is premiering two new games for kids on the go this summer: Summer Scenes and Magic Word. Both games help strengthen vocabulary knowledge by using target vocabulary from the show. Additionally, kids can download the Martha Speaks Dog Party App for the iPhone and iPad.

Online fun, games and new shows – what’s not to like?

School’s Out…Soon!

The countdown is on….8 more days until…..the kids are out of school!  We are lucky and have a fun transition as we immediately head to our timeshare on the beach for a week.  For some this time of year is a hard transition with questions of what to do and statements of, “I’m bored!”  as some camps have not started yet. My advice is to take a breather! We have been going non-stop with all the activities my kids are in and while they may not sleep late at a young age you can encourage them to linger in bed a little while longer or finish that craft they were working on.

Since I work from home and the kids are in camps part of the summer every bit of time off I have I try to take into consideration that it is their summer vacation. Try to be flexible if you have some time off – ask them what they want to do.  Routine is always good so if you have special trips you take together each summer continue that. We start the summer at the beach and we head to beach again the last week of August. What we do in between is not really planned yet but I am sure it will be fun with my two girls leading the way!

Product Review: Swim & Sport babo BOTANICALS

Our friends at babo botanicals sent us a few products to test out.  We love babo! All of their products are sulfate, paraben and phthalate free. They are also dairy and soy free and made with pure flower and plant extracts.

We tested the swim and sport line which will be a welcomed, must have product this summer season, especially if your kids are in chlorine and salt water all day!  Their Clean Sport Shampoo and Wash helps replenish and hydrate both the hair and skin after a day at the beach or the pool. My kids are on the swim team and this gets rid of the chlorine smell and leaves a nice, fresh scent.  Made with soothing organic aloe vera and cucumber it also leaves their hair shiny. It is great for moms and I love that I only have to bring one bottle to the pool with me.   It is also safe for colored treated hair (bonus for those highlights!).

My older daughter has very blond hair so we have an issue with it sometimes turning green.  We sprayed the Cucumber Aloe Vera UV Sport Conditioning Spray before we hit the pool and it kept her hair soft and not dried out and of course no green.   It helps to resist chlorine, salt and sun! And again, perfect if you want to protect those highlights.

If you are sending your kids to summer camp these upcoming months make sure you send along the babo Rosemary Tea Tree Lice Repel Shampoo and Lice Repel Conditioning spray with them! We used this all year long and I loved the smell of it. It contains Rosemary, Tea Tree and mint which the critters avoid!  According to the babo web site it is clinically proven 95% effective.
