Oscar Buzz

Ah the Oscars!  The glitz, the glamour, the hosts – oh no. Everyone was tweeting last night about the fashions, the hosts and the winners. It was fun to be a part of the conversations.  I thought the hosts did fine but James Franco did look a bit like he did not want to be there.  No big surprises for the actual Oscar winners so let’s get to the fashions. The trends for the evening were lots of color (hello red), some lace and shimmer.  The best dressed in my opinion was Sandra Bullock and of course Hailee Steinfeld looked adorable. Of course Halle Berry looks great as always.  The worst dressed in my opinion was Cate Blanchett’s and that dress – yikes.  My favorite places to hear all about the Oscar wrap ups are Entertainment Tonight and US Weekly.  What were your favorites?

Mom to Mom

I find inspiration in other mom’s stories of turning their passion (or their problem) into success. Each week I will post a Q&A about a mom entrepreneur about her business.

The Paci Pixie is the first book written by Amy Perrault & Cheryl Hajjar as part of a company called Indigo Magic to help fill a critical gap in the children’s book market and overcome a deeply personal and shared parenting struggle. The Indigo Pixies are a family of magical multicultural fairies that help children build the confidence they need to overcome developmental milestones.  We asked Cheryl Hajjar, founder of Indigo Pixies a few questions about her business:

Q: When did you first come up with your business idea?

A:  We came up with our business idea sort of by accident. My son Dylan was struggling to give up his pacifier when he was a toddler. I tried everything. Hiding it, cutting pieces off of it but to no avail he was addicted. Since I was a songwriter (spent some time in Nashville writing ) I decided to try and write a nursery rhyme. I created a character “The Paci Pixie” who came to the child’s home while they were sleeping, took their pacifiers and gave them to the new babies in the hospital. I explained to Dylan that he needed to help the new babies. So when “The Paci Pixie” came, she left a toy for him and when he woke up her never asked for the pacifier again. The nursery rhyme came first. When I played the song to my cousin Amy Hajjar Perreault, a Day care provider, she suggested we write a book. Her husband Steve, a graphic artist designed the first character. It was then that the Indigo Pixies were born…..

Q:  What does the future hold for your idea?

A:  Early in our career, we were advised to obtain all of the intellectual property rights of The Indigo Pixies brand. We decided after developing The Paci Pixie that children also have other developmental milestones to reach such as potty training and bedtime issues. We created a series of multi-cultural characters with their own individual personalities that help children. Our other Pixies are: The Potty Pixie, The Bedtime Pixie, The Bubba Pixie, The Blanket Pixie…..Our goal is to not only publish our books but to license out the characters individually in the form of toys, dolls, games and the like. We are an exhibitor at this year’s LIMA (licensing international merchandiser’s association) Expo in Las Vegas in June 2011 to make this dream a reality. Our mission is to make the Indigo Pixies a household name.

Q:  Any advice for other mom owned businesses?

A:  Find a reputable law firm that specializes in intellectual property. Your idea or business is only as good as the protection that you have on it. Any idea can be recreated so you must make sure to properly protect your interest.  Develop an idea that poses a solution for your particular audience. Something that after a consumer tries your product, becomes a necessity. If your idea helps a parent or a child, that is key.

A Bag for all seasons

ooh I just received an email from Godiva that I am to receive a free environmentally friendly reusable tote pouch! (yes I do have a rewards card – what can I say I love chocolate but that’s another post) There are so many reuable totes out there. Are you using reusable totes? Here are a few favorites of mine.

The ChicoBag blossom collection  for the spring is like a breath of fresh air! I like the shoulder length straps and how it fits into a small pouch.

Ecobags has a great organic cotton reusable shopping bag. I like that it’s cotton and can fold easily.

Reuseit also has just about everything on their site.  Love the name of the reuseit workhorse shopping bag set. This set of 4 bags is the most compact and holds 120 plus pounds!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

There has been so much talk of what to buy for Valentine’s Day and the best gifts that I decided to write about something a little bit different for this day and talk about a trend that my 6 year just loves to do….shop your closet.

My 6 year old asked me if I was going to talk about her in my blog post and I told her I would! Especially because she made me think about this trend – shopping in your closet!

Yes, on many occasions she shops in my closet and puts together the most adorable outfits. This past weekend she put together this outfit for me (didn’t even know I had the necklace). Both her and my 9 year old are quite the fashionistas – see other picture below.  There are so many ways to update your look this upcoming spring season with pieces you already have in your closet – think cargos with bright colors like orange or pink or gold jewelry with that black dress your own and snakeskin is big – from accessories to dresses.  Just take an inventory of what you already have and throw out what you have not worn and go from there….

Snack Time

At any time I can look in my kitchen cabinet and find a snack. Would they be healthy? Sometimes yes and sometimes maybe not. But I try!  I do love anything that comes in those 100 calorie packs! Emerald 100 calorie natural almonds are great with Fage total 2% greek yogurt.  But then again I like the oreo crisps and the cheese balls! Thank you to parenting magazine for listing some healthier grab and go snacks. Can’t wait to try the granola bites.

What’s in your bag?

I love how US weekly interviews celebs and shows what’s inside their pocketbooks. I have a ton of stuff in mine (as you can see) but now it’s nice and neat and easy to reach thanks to Jen Groover’s invention The Butler Bag. She created the world’s first compartmentalized bag.

What a great idea!  Each of your items fits into the different slots inside the bag so they are easy to reach. No more digging at the bottom of your purse for keys! Can you believe she thought of this idea by putting a dishwasher tray right in her purse? I just made over the contents of my purse and here are my must have items to keep in my handbag:

My wallet, keys and iphone of course!

My favorite lip balm and lip gloss by Tarte and Alba coconut cream lip gloss

Mini first aid kit with Neosporin

CleanWell hand sanitizer and wet ones hand wipes

Nail file and mini hair brush/comb

Pen and notebook

Listerine breath strips and when my kids don’t swipe it – GUM

My all time favorite hand cream Arbonne FC5 ultra-hydrating hand cream
